The AMANS Education Committee is pleased to annouce the release of another leadership module - Leading in the Municipal Sector: Relationships, Decision Making & Innovation. This module is designed to improve leadership skills for Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), Directors, Managers, Mayors/Wardens and Councillors. In this module participants will learn the definition of council/staff relations, gain awareness on why leadership is different in the municipal sector, and discuss what challenges municipal leaders face with innovation. This module will be facilitated by Mark Peck, Executive Director with the Province of Nova Scotia & Paul Kearley with Dale Carnegie Training.

Workshop Objectives

  • Define leadership and how it is different in the municipal sector
  • Establish what the qualities of a good leader are
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of Council and CAOs as leaders
  • Determine how to deal with issues when there is cross-over between staff and council roles
  • Determine how to make tough decisions that may not be politically palatable but are in the best interest of the community
  • Understand how to lead with innovation while striking a balance with accountability, fiscal responsibility, and stewardship
